<VV> 1969 performance issues

I did none of that (change manifolds, jetting, timing Curve, etc) but even
with a faded memory of yesteryear, I would not have known how to do any of
that.

I had loved my Corsa convertible, and my friend's Corsa coupe, but hated the
'69 because of the horrendous performance, that the dealer could not
(legally) fix.

I probably did tune it up, and maybe change timing until it ran correctly,
and I may have changed the spark plugs, but maybe not?

I remembering the pinging and knocking, and it couldn't get out of its own
way.

It's possible there was something else wrong that I inadvertently fixed in
the process, but that would be just a guess at this point.

I removed the smog pump and pipes and I think I might have put bolts in the
manifold holes to plug them?
Driving on the NY thruway all the way to Jamestown, NY, (near Buffalo) from
Long Island, over 400 miles, I averaged nearly 85 MPH and back home a little
slower, but a beautiful drive.

My favorite moments were against a new 1969 metallic blue Charger when we
went bumper to bumper from the entrance ramp to over 80 MPH when he tried to
pass me, and I remember that we shifted at almost exactly the same times.

Since it was a 55 zone, we both called it a draw, and slowed down before we
got caught, and I was worried about fan belts since I had shifted/clutched
so hard.

The "body build" was poor too, dripped "stuff" under the paint around edges,
and the dealer drilled holes in the rear panel for their logo, which annoyed
the hell out me!

I grew to love it with the improved performance and gas mileage though, and
have owned Corvairs ever since.

Charlie

Without the smog pumps, it was everything I expected, and the performance
impressed a lot of muscle car in "unsanctioned events"! I was a happy
camper, finally!

Actually there was only ONE AIR PUMP [ Air Injection reaction ] that
only blew cold air into the exhaust manifolds

You have to change quite a bit more to gain any performance.. change
manifolds, jetting , timing Curve.

My 47k mile '69 110 had all the above along with 65 heads with the step
modified to clear the piston domes [ as told by original owner]

High Rise air filtration system and D&M Big Single with a 3" Flowmaster 50
with one perforated baffle in the exhaust tip.

The car was clocked at 117 mph on certified radar at 5,000 ft elevation on
a cool night, and achieved high 20's mpg on highway trips
