That’s a lot more fuss than just using a long nut.

You don't need any special tools to get at the tensioner nuts. Just pop the 
distributor cap off with a plain screwdriver and you can use sockets and an 
extension with a ratchet wrench to loosen and tighten the nuts. I always 
carry a tool bag with me when using my Corvair. You never know what will 
fail with a 50 year old car.
