You can change how combustion happens by modifying heads. However a simple
answer is that you can increase or decrease compression thereby changing
the performance of your engine.
Corvairs use the same dimension pistons so what gives you different
horsepower engines is a different head part number which changes, increases
or decreases the squish or combustion chamber size and or shape.
On corvairs you can increase or decrease compression somewhat by the
thickness of the head and cylinder base gaskets.
