<VV> Towing

When a rear wheel loosened up on my 65 Vette coupe and 4 of the studs broke off it had to be towed backwards on it's front wheels. They didn't have the rollbacks like they do now. The tow driver open the vent went window, took off his fat leather belt and wrapped it around the vent window bar and the steering wheel. It was towed about five miles this way without a problem. A friend and I wanted to tow an engineless Buick from the mountains
(Running Springs) to the flatlands. He had an old Ford flathead V-8
pickup that burned a LOT of oil.
Without an engine, that Buick refused to follow the truck.
I had to ride in it and steer, getting fumigated from the trucks exhaust!

I was the only person he knew with a trailer hitch on my car, a roughly 4 year old 1964 Monza. He got hold of one of the old style tow bars that clamps to the center of the bumper. When we got to the car, we found it had no front bumper. Initially we thought he was out of luck. Then somebody got the idea of towing it backwards. The new owner got to ride in the Zephyr, which wanted to go in circles. He had to keep a steady pull in the steering wheel to make it behave. As I recall, it would have helped if he’d kept a little more pull on the wheel.
