Others have explained the workings and advantages of a adjustable timing
light, but there's a downside.
If your timing specs ,say, 14°, you dial in 14° on the light, and your
timing mark will now appear as zero on the engine, BUT, if you don't reset
the timing light to zero, and you use the light again as a REGULAR timing
light, your timing will be WAY off.
Don't ask me how I know this...
