<VV> VV - starter woes

Mike,
I have been told that after years of stress the bellhousing can sag - creating misalignment of the crank and  transaxle centerlines.  The PG bellhousings have less material and might be more prone to sagging.
If that happened (conjecture) - this could cause the starter and ring gear to be too close together; and possibly out of proper alignment.  I don't know of an easy way to check that, however.
