Norm,

First, no Corvair came with internal regulation but you can convert to
that technology.

Second, as far as electrical power, it doesn't matter which direction the
alternator spins. However, the centrifugal fan on the alternator's drive
shaft requires the proper turning direction. Your alternator may overheat
with the wrong fan. The Corvair alternator fan is different from all other
GM fans. You must reuse the fan from your old alternator on the shaft of
the new one. If you get a generic alternator, you will probably need to
switch housing parts for mounting purposes.

If you are mechanically inclined, this is pretty straightforward. There
are descriptions of the process of switching to an internal regulated unit
in a couple of the Corvair publications.

If there is a possibility of adding lights or other power drains in the
future, get an alternator with higher amps. Why do the job twice?

Good luck,

Doc

Was the Corvair ever originally equipped with an internally regulated
alternator, or did they all have an external regulator?? If using a non-Corvair
alternator, is rotation direction a factor?
