<VV> Changing C878 Power Glide gear shift o-ring. How to get the rod off?

The good news: O'Reillys had a viton o-ring assortment. They also had a
grommet assortment.
The bad news: I put it all together again and every shift position was
forward. No neutral, no reverse. So I opened it all back up again. I don't
see any problem. I have a before and after picture of the shift shaft that
is apparently too big to post. They look exactly the same to me. What did I
do wrong?
