<VV> Compression results for 140 motor

 I have attempted a compression test on a 140 motor that is not in the vehicle. I turned motor over with ratchet on crank and could only get between 40 & 50 psi with this method. I am used to checking compression while in vehicle with starter and getting over 120 psi. Any ideas on my hand test method? Are these good numbers for hand testing? Any further advice appreciated.
