I just wanted to say thanks to all those who responded. Phew! What a ride. I asked my wife if she thought this could be similar to what it feels like when someone gets raped? My insides are still "churning".
Anyway, at this point we are still waiting for the "fuzz" to send us the accident report. Someone asked about the tire tracks in the yard. They were caused by the culprit. The set on the left after they careened off the guard rail and into our cars at break-neck speed. The set on the right was after their car bounced off mine about 5 feet. There are tire divets from that spot where they apparently hit the gas in an effort to try to run. They made it about 10 yards down the road before their car totally died. Another car came up behind them and the occupant helped this person push the dead heap up the road a few yards and then off it in front of my next door neighbors' house. The next thing we knew, they were gone! Something definitely smells fishy here. When the staties got there, they called a rollback and impounded the car. As far as I know it still had the license plate on it. If not, they can still trace the VIN. So, it's not a matter of if, but rather WHEN
they identify that person.
We had collision coverage on the corvair, but only liability on the merc. I contacted our insurance co. (USAA) to let them know what is going on. They told us that since we had collision on the corvair, they could start a claim on it. Then they would re-coup the dough from the other guys insurance co. They told me that if the other guy DIDN'T have insurance, then as far as the merc went, we were screwed. Isn't it great being the one caught in the middle?
Someone said the cars looked " fixable". Well, a friend at a local body shop said they, more than likely because of their ages, would total them both. ( '98 and '65) As far as the merc goes, that front wheel is really bent inward badly at the top, and out at the bottom. And the fender is crinkled, too. He said if the only mechanical damage is the strut being bent, then it's probably fixable. The only real question mark is if there is any internal damage to the trans-axle from the side impact. As for the corvair, yes, the rocker is undamaged, but the pillar the door attaches to is wasted. Plus, how do you tell if the car twisted from the impact?
Decisions, decisions. There are lots of choices and decisions that need to be made. Which path do we choose to go down? One thing that may be a positive development is that the '66 coupe I recently posted on vv that's for sale, is still for sale. I called the guy about it and told him not to sell it. I mentioned in that post that I wished I had the money to buy it because it was a "perfect" daily driver candidate. Well, maybe in a roundabout way, I got my wish. But that's a helluva way to get it!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, all there is to do now is hurry up and wait. Patience, anyone???
