Interesting discussion and maybe some of the racers can chime in.
Just for comparison.  Rochester made Quadrajets in two sizes in the early
70's, in 750 and 800 cfm flow ratings.  The only difference was the size of
the primary venturis was increased from 1 & 3/32" to 1 & 7/32".  The
throttle bore remained the same at 1 & 3/8".  So with an increase of 4/32"
or 1/8', they increased the flow by 50cfm.  Not a big gain but may have
been the best compromise at the time.  You obviously still have a venturi
effect with these Q-jets but they did increase the venturi bore and were
still able to pass idle and emissions requirements.
