<VV> Scary Corvair ride!

Need some advice on my latest Corvair issue. Driving along at maybe 35 mph when car started to fill with smoke from under dash. Pulled over and disconnected the battery. After a few minutes smoke cleared and was able to drive home safely. Did take quick glance under dash to see some wires starting to melt there covering. Any ideas of the cause? Any help appreciated.
