<VV> wipers and other things

I have a buddy who recently purchased a pretty nice '64 coupe and has
been sorting out things since he got it. It's a beautiful car lots of
options. Today while driving he hit a small rain shower and the wipers
did not work except if he used the washers? As he drove further,to get
home, the tranny made a "banging" sound in only 4th gear? Car ran fine
enough to get home. What gives? Ed
