<VV> Directional Signal Broken During Inspection - Now Telescopic Column

Hi folks.  Last week I relayed the story of how a vehicle inspection station broke the directional switch in my 69 Monza Convertible while trying to pull on the stalk to change the headlights from high beams to low beams.  Well, I ended up accepting some cash from the business, just enough to purchase a new directional switch, but obviously, I will have to do the work to put it in.  I appreciate the ideas and tech suggestions that y'all provided.
Now that my steering column is torn apart and I can't drive the car until the repair, I am toying with a new idea.  When I purchased my 69 Convertible in the late 1990's, I also received a late Corvair (67+) complete telescopic steering column, complete with fake wood steering wheel.   As I always seem to rub my pants or shorts on the steering wheel (stock, black) as I enter the car, from stuff in my pocket hitting the steering wheel, leaving marks on my pants, I am thinking that I can fix that by switching the steering column, not to mention that the telescopic steering column just looks nice!   So, any thoughts on the difficulty in switching out the stock 69 steering column and mounting in the telescopic steering column?  I don't know how many 69's came with a telescopic column, but since I have it, I think that it would be nice to put in the car.  My other option was to put it online and sell it, but it would probably end up going to a Corvette restorer.  The only problem with the column, which is in overall great shape, is that the plastic wood look steering wheel has two cracks in it, which I understand is quite common.  Is there a Corvair steering wheel restoration specialist out there somewhere?  TIA for any ideas or comments. Todd in TXLeMans Blue 1969 Monza Convertible, 110hp, 4-Speed, 53,000 miles
