Rick,
 My first guess is that your friend's left brake shoes were contaminated with brake fluid.  This may not be obvious at a glance.  If I am right, he is already addressing the issue with the new shoes.  Both sets of shoes may be contaminated but the left more so than the right so that may be why he didn't detect the issue at first. Please let us know what results he gets from the shoe replacement. Your friend has already invested lots of money and labor so, don't install the idler arm until you see the results of the new shoes.  If the arm can be returned, do so if the shoes fix the problem. Doc~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
