To All,Regarding the GB I asked about several weeks back; copied below - with follow-up below that.
A local guy has joined the Corvair fraternity - 63 Greenbrier. He was having drivability issues; at tip-in the engine would fall flat on it's face. He's replaced the carbs, plugs, and wires - all from Clark's. The van had a Pertronics looking unit; but it does not have full 12 volts (I don't know offhand whether its a I or II). It started easily and ran smoothly.
Today we replaced the leaking balance tube hoses and the the base of the leaking fuel pump. Went through the carb initial set-up and balancing.
Timing (steel pulley) was very advanced (guessing 25° BTDC); reset to 13° BTDC. Engine now much harder to start; so reset to about 20°BTDC.
While driving, it still has the same tip-in issue. I don't think it's the carbs (because it's acting the same way it did with the old carbs).
I'm unsure how to proceed - anybody have any recommendations? Thanks,Andy K.Wisconsin
So, this is what we did:1 - Pulled the #1 plug to see if the timing mark was somehow off (sheared or missing key); as best I could tell it's at least very close to correct. Still have to run too much advance.2 - Swapped out the Pertronics with a good used points plate, with new points and condenser.3 - Removed and went through both carbs; biggest problem I saw was the floats were set lower than I expected. Possibly they were dropped during shipping? Reinstalled carbs and synchronized. Ran better, but still running very poorly when hot.4 - Although he'd replaced the coil with a new Bosch unit - I still suspected the coil. Swapped in a good used coil; now it's running pretty nicely. Even a new coil can be faulty.
So far, so good. He went for a 25 mile ride the other day, and he's happy with how it's running. So am I.
Thanks for all of the suggestions,Take care,Andy K.Wisconsin
