I'm in the SECC, and I've driven that car. I know a little bit.

I not 100% sure of the origin, but I believe it was donated by Bob Bentz.
It was a rolling heap of metal and rust, different colored doors, trunk and
deck lid, etc. But at least it was car, and ran fairly well a couple of
years ago.

Since then, the club members have worked on it a TREMENDOUS amount. I went
down to St. Augustine in March and frankly, I didn't recognize it. It was a
gorgeous white, with blue stripe and well done advertising for local vendors
who had donated parts and supplies. The interior was still a well worn
brown - yuk. However, whenever it had trouble, anybody and everybody was
all over it like ants, trouble shooting alternator and plugged gas line
issues.

You're quite correct. That car certainly bonds the club. Each member that
doesn't have their own car to drive (or breaks their own while down there -
been there done that - LOL ) pays a small fee to drive the club car. Those
monies I assume go to gas, tires, break fluid, oil, filters, etc.

They have spent a lot of time doing their own body work and paint. I wish
my club's "tech sessions" would get more done in this manner. I would like
to take the club owner's car which we deem the "least prepared" and do
brakes, carbs, etc. Although we get together and talk about it, or demo how
it's supposed to be done, it ends up being more social.

Their car is also a great advertisement for Corvairs since they take it to
local autocrosses. It really looks wonderful.

Surely there are monthly autocrosses in the Houston area you could frequent?

I certainly encourage you. Get those experienced guys to lend their minds
to the young guys bodies so the young ones can learn something. They'll
have a lot of fun with the results.
