As part of my business, supplying police badges, we also supply plastic
name badges of the type convention attendees wear.
Paper tags with a plastic sleeve and a pin are indeed the least
expensive option. However, I would like to suggest that instead of a
pin we use around-the-neck lanyards, eliminating the need for people to
poke a pinhole in their clothing.
Lanyards cost more but they do offer a sponsorship opportunity --
imprinted lanyards are common in my industry.
Most paper tags are printed on a PC printer, and devising a layout that
incorporates punchouts for events should pose no difficulty.
As for the suggestion of incorporating local club affiliation, be wary
that as you add information to a name badge it becomes more and more
difficult to read that information. Personally, I think that name and
home state is sufficient.
Finally, if Tim Schwartz is investigating costs, one of the things he
may wish to do it get in touch with Harry Jensen. It is my
understanding that in recent years CORSA has purchased the plastic
sleeves by the caseload, enough to last many conventions. It will be
worthwhile to find out at what level that stock is anticipated to be
following the 2011 convention.
