CORSA 2012: Fw: CORSA 2012 Convention:

Hi Ken,

In general, I like the idea of exhibits, and it would be neat to line up some exhibits showing the evolution of independent rear suspensions. There are two possible alternatives: a hardware exhibit and a poster-board exhibit.

For the hardware exhibit:

Unfortunately, the late-series Corvair has no rear subframe, so it would be difficult to exhibit anything other than a collection of trailing arms and strut rods sitting on a work bench! And although I was kidding about the Fiat 600, we'd be faced with the same dilemma as the Fiat was a unit-body car. Just about the only one that makes sense is the Corvette - if someone out there has a rolling Corvette StingRay chassis, that would make a great exhibit because the layout of the independent rear suspension would be clear to see. But the odds of finding a person who owns a body-less Corvette are awfully slim.

For a post-board exhibit:

This could include photos or schematics of the suspension layouts. It would be neat to include some diagrams showing the change in camber and toe-in as each of the "linkages" go through their range of motion. Overall, such an exhibit might make for a great tech session, but it would take someone who knows how to create clear graphics in 3 dimensions. Anybody willing to volunteer?

Al

Al:

Maybe we should put the suspension idea on the Agenda for the February planning meeting?

Given the logistics (i.e. difficulty) in transporting the rear suspensions, I was wondering if one of the more local clubs could provide one of at least the '65, if not one of the pre-'64. Could one (or more) of these clubs set up a nice display?

I agree that the #1 question I get at shows is why the early Corvair suspension was considered by some to be dangerous....though I'm an "early" guy, I always end my answer with a plug for the '65 and up design. The incredulous looks I get when I try to explain the '65 and up should melt away if one of each was sitting there, exposed, for the public to see.

If there is a cost to make some nice display, we may be able to rustle up some dinero...somehow. I know I'd donate something.

I think it was good to bring up the Corvette thing....it generated some ideas.

But when I display my '66 Corvair at car shows, spectators are always amazed when I tell them that my $2,400 economy car has the same suspension as a '63 - '82 Corvette. I'll concede on a ban of Corvettes at our convention, but I still think it would be a neat idea to have an exhibit showing the two suspensions side-by-side. Al

>Brian, I am OK with Hugh Maquire's proposal, especially if the informational display includes the original Corvette-based Corvair show car, which was basically a '53 Vette with a fast-back roof. It would also be interesting if the display includes an exhibit of the '63 to '82 Corvette rear suspension, which is nearly identical to the '65-'69 Corvair rear suspension. The story of the Sting Ray rear suspension - the who, what, when, where and why of its development - should interest anybody who owns the second-series Corvair. All I've ever heard about it is that it was developed by Zora Arkus-Duntov, but I doubt that he was involved in its engineering. Al Lacki

>Brian Hello. My name is Hugh Maguire and I am a friend of Jim Bengiovanni (Bay State Corvairs). Jim has informed me of your July convention and I want to ask if you would like to feature a special informational display of original Corvettes on or near your show field. I represent the New England Chapter of the National Corvette Restorers Society [NCRS] ---- http://newenglandchapterncrs.homestead.com/ ---The NCRS has an annual chapter requirement to have an informational display at an event organized by others. Our chapter could arrange to bring a few member cars and a NCRS information booth for one of your show days - if you wish and if there is space available etc. I plan to bring a suggestion to attend your event in some capacity to our BOD in March. Any comments pro or con? Hugh Maguirehulin127 at verizon.net 127 Coldspring RoadWestford MA 01886
