[FC] sputtering

Ben, these are also the classic symptoms of the points needing attention.
The rubbing block wears and the point gap closes up a tad and when the
vacuum advance pulls the points around, they open at the wrong time causing
the crap-out when you step on it and smoothing out when you back off a
little and the vacuum pot returns. Try cleaning and resetting the points.
