[FC] Chasing an Oil Leek

Bob and Mike, the early and late bell housings are different by about
.060 in the location of the seal on the crankshaft hub. There is no
difference in how they mate up to the differential. The early crankshaft hub
is about .090 longer than the late hub. You state you have a 140 PG, if you
have an early bell housing on, the seal may not be in the proper place for
sealing, it may be right at the edge of the hub. I have repositioned the
seal in a couple instances to put the seal at a different location on the
hub by installing 2 cyl base gaskets under the seal. I have done this
primarily to get the seal surface away from a wear ring on the hub.
One other thing you need to be cautioned on is a early flex plate
must be used on the early hub and late flex plate must be used on the late
hub. These can be visually identified by the fact that late flex plate has a
3/16 or so hole between two of the 6 bolt hub mounting holes, and the early
does not.
The bell housings can be identified by the part number, early starts
with 625XXXX and late starts with 383XXXX.
I have seen one other source of an engine oil leak in this area, when
the crank hub was installed, no gasket was used, and the engine oil leaked
through the keyway.

           Bob
