    Any grease fitting that you do has to go in through  the side. Yes, the 
cap is hardened.
    I have drilled and tapped for a grease fitting in  Idler arms and 
Boomerangs. Some grease will get where it is  needed eventually but going through the 
side is a stop gap measure. What  usually wears inside is a rubber spacer 
wears out leaving the stud to slide back  and forth and sometimes the stud it's 
self will be rusted and worn  internally.
    The parts really need to be replaced and a  greasable cap installed if 
there is any play in the stud.
    If I had the parts or part numbers for the  replacement parts, I have 
several cores that could be built.
