only safe way to adjust it is with the cover off.  even then, you  better 
pray it is not pinion adjustment...which is a bench job.you need to be  able to 
see the clearance between the gears. the face contact of the gears is  kinda 
criticle.see  the pictures in the manual.   too tight is as  bad as too loose. 
the trick of gears is to try to get the load centered on the  face of the 
gears. this is a complete study by itself to get it correct.use a  feeler gauge or 
a piece of hard paper as an indicator.
any noises like that could (usually is) an indication of a failing  bearing.  
one little spot on a roller will be pretty loud.  while the  cover is off add 
a can of some type of motor honey.  this stays on bearings  a lot longer that 
just gear oil, keeping lube where it is needed when first  started up..and 
helps keep moisture away from higher parts.
