[FC] generic Corvair

This is my first FC so I keep encountering systems and materials I am unfamiliar with. Today I want to "clean up" or dress up the shifter knob on Rampys' 4 - speed. It appears to be a bakelite - type plastic, or else some other kind of a rough, grainy plastic. Can this stuff be polished or dressed up a bit?
