[FC] space saver spare

For those that have switched to a space saver, how did you mount it to
the wall of the van?  Ive got one from a mid 80's caprice which is the
correct bolt pattern but when I mount it inside the van it sits about
half an inch off the step beside the engine cover.  The factory rod &
wing nut wont go all the way in to hold it tight.  Did you make your
own shorter holder or just cut down the original
