My experience (Fieros) is that this stuff tends to separate in the foam 
layer -- I do not recommend it. Nor would I recommend sealing this area 
up tight -- you will possibly trap moisture up there, promoting the 
continued deterioration you are trying to hide, ala the rubber floormat 
problem.
