I converted my Rampy from Generator to alternator using the tech guide (1998 edition) steps. It has me connecting the wires to the voltage regulator sowmwhat differently than the old generator connections.
I show 14 Volts on my aftermarket meter on the dash when cruising but last weekend drove it at night for the first time. Once I was underway W /low beams voltage began to drop steadily until it read about 8 volts after 20 miles. She limped into my garage after a 24 mile trip.
I need to find out what is the deal. The unit is a rebuilt 1965 37 amp unit from our favorite vendor. The battery has less than 4 hours on it and takes a charge easily. As a test I shut off the headlights for am oment as I drove in the section of highway where there were streetlights, and the volt meter went back up to about 11 volts. Do i need to go back to the tech guide? Is this type of alternator transplant usually successful?
Thanks
Tim W ''61 Rampy
