YOur ignition switch failure reminds me of a story i read about several years ago regarding the keys left in the ignition. The gist of it was that the heavy key ring with numerous keys and fobs hanging from it would wear on the  switch mechanism, as it was only designed to hold a key not necessarily be a weight - bearing device. 
My neighbor across the street has a 2003 Poncho that his wife drives that is exhibiting this sdame condition and I am going to show this email to him.
