[FC] Intermittent engine turning itself off

Hi Bruce and gang;  First I want to thank all for their input!  It is great to have such a garage of experts to turn to.  Secondly I failed to say that the engine does stop running each time, thus the gen light should come on.  Then when it automatically kicks back in, the light goes off as it should.  There have been times where the engine dies and does not restart on its own.  But once I pull off the road it usually restarts right up and I move on until the next occurance.  They seen random other than as I said, they don't happen until the engine is warm.  Thus I was able to travel about 6-8 miles in 40 degree Michigan weather the last outing before the first occurance.  Just so you have all the info.  Again, thanks and I will begin the search.  Steve

I agree with Shaun.  A bad coil, wire to distributor, or wire to coil will not turn on the GEN light 'til the engine stops (or nearly).  It is most likely a connection somewhere between the engine and the dash board.  Check all connections from the engine forward for bador shorting to ground.  If a short, it could cause a fire!!!!  Bruce

Hello gang; I took the '61 Rampside out for a ride today since it was sunny and only a bit chilly here in southwest Michigan. I drove the Rampside about 6 miles before a symptom that I had experienced this summer reoccurred. The engine stumbles, the gen light comes on causing the truck to slow, then the engine kicks in, the gen light goes off and things are okay. After 6 miles the problem reoccurred at irregular times, but in the last 3 miles home it must have occurred at least 4 more times. Last summer I had thought that the weight of the key fob I had attached to the ignition key might be the cause of the problem, causing the ignition key to be pulled a bit away from run position. I checked this out on the way home today and found that it did not seem to be related at all. I have not done anything else to check for the cause. Any leads as to probable causes? Since it seems to happen once the engine is fully warmed up could it be
coil?, fuel pump? what else?
Many thanks in advance. Steve '61 Rampside(with car engine), '61 Lakewood
