Good call... yes, ideally the alt should be supported from the back as designed.  Hard for a guy to guess what harmonics and vibrations it sees during operation.  Also, if you can't turn your alt fan by hand the belt is most likely too tight.

i do not go without the rear bracket, slight bending in vise , rotate case 
to terminal up position. i think this shows on motors on the website

the alternator can actually vibrate a slight amount if not supported as 
designed.
