My experience with two factory new engines as well. A new 1968 and a factory replacement engine. No paint on the valve covers or oil pan.

Hello,

Several years ago I had a brief Q/A with lclc about engine sheet
metal. The official word: Valve covers and oil pans of all Corvair engines
were stamped from terne (a lead-tin alloy) plated steel sheet and left the
factory without additional paint. Orange, black or any other color valve
covers are non-stock.
