I have never read of turn-signal stalks being an issue with our trucks, but I have had a problem and so will share.
The stalk is so situated that when I turned the steering wheel to the left my hand inevitably caught on it. Corvairs are blessed with light easy steering and yet this characteristic made it much less fun to drive.
Last night I unthreaded the stalk with the idea of shortening it's length.
Clamping the stalk in my vise I gently warmed the steel up with a torch until hot and then slid the plastic end grip off.
I noted that the metal core was about 1/8ths inch in diameter
I used my tubing cutter to make a deep groove around the steel shaft about 1&1/4inches in from the end. Then I chucked the stalk into my drill and ran it backwards while holding the end portion that needed to be reduced to 1/8ths inch. Very soon I arrived at my 1/8ths inch and then reassembled the plastic tip with some clear 2 -part epoxy. I threaded the now-shorter stalk into the column, and now the issue is corrected.
Question: Do all FC';s have this issue or was my turn signal stalk installed later by a previous owner?
