I'm really happy to say we got a lot done. First, on that Friday, I took
the day off and put in several hours, first replacing a section of metal
brake line that was leaking (it was the piece from the rear splitter to the
drivers side rear wheel). Then I replaced my spark plugs with new ones
(after cleaning out the holes with a thread chaser). I also reattached the
one carb and the generator, cleaned the fan belt pulleys with steel wool
(there was a little rust in them), and cleaned some of the grease and grime
from the engine.
On Saturday, Darrin and I started around 9:00 and worked until almost 2:00
(I really owe him one). We removed the bell housing from the block, replaced
the bell housing seal and gasket (getting the old gasket off took a long
time). We replaced the pilot bushing (used the bread method which worked
well). We replaced the input shaft seal and the 2 axle seals. We
reassembled the clutch components (with the new flywheel to pressure plate
bolts), reattached the power train components and then reinstalled the power
train into the car (yippee!).
This past weekend, I spent some time replacing the oil pan gasket. That
took a long time since someone had used that silicone gasket maker stuff and
it was a bear to clean off. I also reattached the linkages, wiring,
exhaust, etc. to prepare to try to start the engine. Its basically all back
together except for the engine to body seals. I'll probably wait for a
warmer day to try to start the thing. I can hardly wait to see what
happens.
I still have some brake work to do. I at least need to bleed everything. I
know I should also plan on replacing all the wheel cylinders and rubber
brake lines. Also, I suppose the brake master cylinder is suspect because
of its age.
I can also start thinking about buying 4 new tires and a battery. I think I
should also plan on repacking the wheel bearings before driving the car more
than a couple blocks.
I'm sure I'll still have something to keep us busy for the April meeting.
-Mike

Hi Mike,
So, how much progress did you guys make? It looks like we have seen
the last of the really good weather for a while, so I think you made
the right move getting something done while the getting was good!
