Mike (& Darren), CONGRATULATIONS! I know the feeling of bringing Corvairs
back from the dead, so I know you are excited! The 51R is correct. The
WalMart batteries are actually made by Exide, so you are getting an
American-made battery for a reasonable price. Generator or alternator does
not matter... After you drain whatever may be left in the gas tank, you do
not need any type of special wrench to remove the sending unit, just a dull
screwdriver, and light taps with a hammer. You are lucky that the car is a
'61, because if you have to replace the tank, they are available new (this
is not the case with '60's). I have had very good luck sandblasting the
outside of old gas tanks, then cleaning out the inside with an old chain,
and resealing, both in the case of a '64 Continental and the '62 Rampside I
currently have (both tanks are not available new). I would not bother
trying to save the tires, unless they are the originals, and you only plan
on driving the car on and off of a trailer at car shows. Do you really need
another set of wheels and tires hanging around? You can get a very good
quality set of radials for a reasonable price. SAFETY is of the utmost
concern! We'll see you Saturday... Greg
