I got the following diagnosis thru Virtual Vairs:

Daniel,

It remind me when my 62 Rampside failed on the road, 4 months ago,... no audible noise while coasting, some while cruising but, the "whump, whump" at accelerating. Tranny/Diff. oil temperature went to 280º F (have temp. gauge). Cause: pinion bearing went South. Hope it is not your case as it required powertrain removal, diff. disassembly, 2 new bearings and 5 hours working on it. If it is your case and want to get the bearings locally, ask for: M88048 + M88010 (Timken and other brands) or 330451 (SKF) . They are easily available at industrial warehouses.

The symptoms he describes are precisely what's happening with my car. Other VV'ers suggested this too.

Tomorrow I'm going to try some things Curtis suggested, but the consensus seems to be pinion bearing. Should this be the problem:

- Does anyone know what he's doing when tearing apart a diff?

- In the alternative, does anyone have a four speed box I can purchase?

- I don't have a meeting coming up, but would anyone care to join me at the garage located at my office? I would have to first get permission from the VP in charge of it, but if I do then perhaps we can spin a wrench the weekend after the mini convention?

This is ... unexpected.

daniel
