If you find no other apparent cause for the noise and plan to replace the
part suggested on Virtual Vairs it would be the differential not the
transmission. I have never torn and rebuilt a differential. In the past
it was always easier to get a replacement diff. I think that you need
special tolls and equipment such as a shop press to replace a pinion
gear. However, as parts get harder to find you may have to get someone
to rebuild yours - maybe The Corvair Ranch. The last time I wanted work
done on a diff I shipped to Larry Claypool.
