Well, tracking something like this down pretty much always would 
involve this sort of thing.  The old guy could have told him to "go 
away" but didn't.  The rest is a matter of public record - and there's 
lots out there about anyone who makes transactions of any kind - most 
of this info would be part of a title search if the subject were a 
house.
