[NoVa-Corvairs] RE: 61' Steering Box

On that subject, I've been meaning to solicit some feedback from the
group.
First a little background. On Friday, I drove my car 10 miles to work
and 10 miles home with no fuel problems (though I had an unrelated
problem with my battery). Saturday I was heading over to Darrin's to
have him check my steering play. I was very low on gas(pretty much on
E) so I stopped and got about 5 gallons. A mile or 2 down the road
towards Darrin's the car sputtered and stalled. I tried unsuccessfully
several times to restart it. About 5 minutes later it did restart and
ran fine the couple additional miles to Darrin's. When I got there we
drove it around the neighborhood and again it sputtered and stalled,
only to restart a few minutes later. We checked the filter stones and
they had a fair amount of debris in them so we figured that was the
immediate problem. We replaced them (Darrin of course had some spares)
and added an in-line fuel filter that I bought a long time ago and drove
it again with the same results (sputter, stall, restart after a few
minutes wait). So we took the tops off of the carbs. They had some
little fine particles resting at the bottom of each, but Darrin said it
was probably insignificant. Darrin feels that the fuel pump, which I'm
sure is 45 years old is the likely culprit. Also, he thought it could
be the strainer in the gas tank that's clogged and causing trouble.
Anybody have any opinion on that or have any other suggestions?
Assuming it is the fuel pump, or at least that it makes sense to change
the 45 year old fuel pump in any case, I checked Clark's. They don't
sell a normal, mechanical fuel pump for '60s or '61s - only for '62s and
newer. I'm not sure why. I was going to call them to ask what is the
difference between the different model years. Anybody know why that is?
They do sell an electric fuel pump for all years so I guess that's an
option. What do you all think of those?
By the way, Darrin's steering adjustment was just what the doctor
ordered for that problem. And it took all of about 5 minutes too.

Hi Curt,
Even more simple than that...though I did pull the box and inspect
it...and even had a back up ready to go, but I found that even though
the
splines on one part of the (worm) shaft were mashed, I could situate a
good clamp to take advantage of what was left. Seems very solid. The
internals of the box itself seem to be just fine and fully greased.
Further on 61' steering boxes...I got to do the "miracle cure" of taking
the lash out of the steering of Mike Puglisi's 61' this last weekend via
a
simple adjustment in the trunk. He brought it over so we could inspect
the front end and we spent all our time trying to figure out his fuel
delivery problem....which we have not solved completely. He is going
to
get a new fuel pump as we suspect that the 45 year old unit on his car
may
be a bit weak.

Darrin:
On the '61 steering box, did you replace the box with another or
disassembly and replace parts inside the box?
