It doesn't need to be that difficult.  You can R&R the u-joints in the 
halfshafts with a hammer and a suitable driving device like an old 
socket.  I use 2 ball peen hammers, one that just fits the u-joint cap 
as a drift, and another larger one to hit the small one.  Using the 
small hammer as a drift allows you hold it in place with the handle and 
not damage your hand while you strike with the big one.  Unless the old 
u-joint caps have exceptionally bad rust, they will tap out without much 
  difficulty.  Squirting penetrant on the caps a couple of times in the 
week before you do the job will help.
