Curt: The ring is installed on the axle when the bearings are initially
pressed onto the axle. I believe he was just making sure that
it was still on. Perhaps it could be omitted when a bearing is replaced.
Let's go for the demo - the more the merrier!

Al B. & the rest:
I don't know anything about early model axles and my question has to do
with Russell Davis' offer to do a demo on pulling early model axle
bearings. During my conversation with Russell he said "make sure that
the ring is still on the axle as my puller needs that to work". I
assumed that this was a Corvair part that came with the car. From Al's
message about "ring puller" one could conclude that the part needed by
Russell is an after market part that you need to pull the bearing. Can
someone explain?
If no one has a problem I do plan to formally advise Russell that he will
do the 10:00 AM tech session with me as a backup to talk about recent
camshaft failures and the role the "new API SM oils may have on that.
Bryan would then do the afternoon tech session.
Curt
