Maybe this will help a little.  These are the instruction manuals for the
equipment I bought recently.  Skip the calibration part, and you will get to
the instructions, calculations and tables.  I'm using this equipment for
commercial alignment in Tarija.
40 years ago I used a surveyor's level, mason's level, etc. since no
equipment was in Bolivia.

The way I've achieved a level surface is using floor tile and a water  
level to make 4 level pads for the tires.  I think Harbor Freight  
even has turntables so you can set the castor.
