[NoVa-Corvairs] Early Model Engine Removal

Guys:

For the first time in my life I am going to help take an early model
engine out.  Question about the axles.  I assume that you have to take
the wheel and brakes off and unbolt the backing plate and pull on the
axles so that the short spine shaft comes out of the diff.  If that is
correct how hard is it to pull these freed axles from the diff.  Can it
be easily done by hand or do you need any special tools?

I am off in the Corvair for the weekend on a museum tour with the antique
auto club so I may not read any replies till Sunday night.
