[NoVa-Corvairs] accellerator pedal adjustment

I have no idea how different the 61 is from the 60, but my pivot mounted on
the transmission was totally bent and twisted. As were a few rods, hitting
on different parts of the suspension and body. I straightened the pivot to
90 degrees, then started bending rods back to where they didn't hit anything
and the rod into the engine compartment was back in the center of the hole.

Daniel: Curt's comment about the separation of the pedal from the carpet (or
sheet metal) is the first thing I would check If you don't have the
"primary" motion at that point, you will never get the motion needed in the
engine compartment.
The next step is to loosen the rod from the cross link in the engine
compartment. Move the link so the throttle plate moves from closed to full
open. Now see if the rod from the pedal moves through the same arc. As Curt
mentioned, the swivel that connects to the cross link is threaded and has
quite a bit of adjustment. Move the rod to see if the swivel will follow the
cross shaft. Logically the pedal will be close to the floor mat at wide open
throttle. At idle, the pedal should be well away from the floor mat.
If this doesn't work (because you can't get the travel in the rod) go to the
1961 Shop Manual. [Without this manual, you might as well take the car to
Larry Claypool.] First take a look at the assembly shown in Figure 9-7 in
Section 9 of the '61 Shop Manual. This shows the two pivots and the rod
leading into the engine compartment. If either one of these pivots are loose
(rusted out), or badly worn, this may be your problem. If they are ok, then
go to page 9-2, bottom of page. The instructions on how to adjust the pedal
linkage are described here. Note that the crank-like shaft that goes
through the pedal is serrated and is pressed into the pedal. If this
serration slips, you will need a new pedal assembly with a crank that
doesn't slip. Also note that the bracket that is attached to the floor must
be tight, or the motion of the pedal cannot be transferred to the rod going
to those swivel joints. (you will have to remove the floor mat and cover
over the pedal mechanism
to examine that area. Assuming everything is tight, check the bushings,
shown in figure 9-5, to see if they are worn or missing. Replace anything
that is loose.
When that has been checked/repaired, go to the section on Accelerator
Control Linkage Adjustments - see figures 9-7 and 9-8.
Instructions cover both manual transmission and automatic applications.
That should get you back in business!

I guess turning that particular swivel towards the front of the car would
make the secondaries come on that much sooner, but it still feels like I
have no pedal travel whatsoever.
In any event, it sounds like there's no magic, hidden adjust-o-matic I've
overlooked. I think the anwer is to get a pivot-to-pivot rod onto which the
swivel hasn't yet fused itself. As I recall, the 1965 version is specific
to that year.
As for car rental, I'll pay the ten bucks. AJ, don't you have something
like three cars? Aren't we brother officers now? Brother Queensians?
