I wouldn't. Why pay that much, then screw it up. Oil is a very carefully calculated and balanced recipe. When you mix or put in additives, you are changing the balance. In this paper I show some of the formulas tested. http://www.widman.biz/Corvair/English/Links/Oil.html

Yes, it is possible to create an oil with less wear, but at the cost of sludge and carbon. The graphs are in that paper.

I would not put any additive in an oil except for something like AutoRx every 50,000 miles or so for the 1000 mile cleaning cycle. And never the "maintenance dose".

About this 1600 ppm or 1200 ppm : what if we use the Hemmings oil, but replace one quart with a non-additive quality oil? Where would that put us? Thanks........................Jake C. McCahn... PROUD user of STP oil additive with ZDDP, per Richard Petty and Andy Granatelli. Why, I STILL can't pick up any of my screw drivers to this day! (older guys explain to younger guys)

I've written probably too much about this on my site and forums, but yes, 1600 is on the high side for our cars, maybe good in the muscle cars. It won't hurt, but it is expensive and I believe better than the home brews that are usually over in protection and light on keeping deposits low. It is also on the expensive side.

A good CI-4, or even a CJ-4 is all we need and a lot more than anything offered in the 60's and 70's.

As for break-in, most people would now argue that the normal level of additives is right. New cam, a little paste. Old cam, same oil as you will continue to use. Small aircraft break-in without additives as you want the oil consumption to end in the first 25 hours or so. Can't run low in the air. With normal oil, we will see break-in within 2000 to 4000 miles unless moly or chrome rings, which might take a little longer. No big deal.

A. J.: Over the years there has been so many articles and recommendations about the amount of zinc that you need for older cars with flat tappets like in the Corvair that I think we are all confused. The Hemmings oil says it has 1,600 ppm of zinc which may not hurt your Corvair but, if I remember correctly, the SAE did a paper on this years ago and said 1,200 ppm was optimal. Also you may not want 1,600 ppm in your engine during break-in or you may have problems seating your rings. I believe Cal Clark has in his catalog to break in with non-detergent oil which I think it too far the other way. I have read some papers that suggest 1,100 ppm is best for break-in. I have been mixing new and old oil for break in for my last 3 engine rebuilds and have had no problems but I think the the Corvair valve spring pressures are low enough that you have a fair amount of lee way on break in. Once broke in I use new oil with a ZDDP supplement to get me around the 1,200 ppm area. I do have the oil analyzed by a lab to make sure I am not too far off the mark. Curt Shimp

Hemmings introduces zinc-rich motor oil formulated specifically for classic cars

One of the biggest worries among car collectors today is what oil they should use in their cars. As the zinc and phosphorous content continues to drop in modern motor oils on the corner parts store shelves, the risk of damaging the engines in our collector cars continues to increase. The resulting wiped-out camshafts and other mayhem can cost a pretty penny, and even destroy irreplaceable pieces of history, which is why we at Hemmings decided to offer a new brand of motor oil formulated specifically for collector cars.

Since the lack of zinc in modern motor oils became a problem, we’ve seen all sorts of complicated responses; we’ve even heard of guys crushing up zinc tablets from their pharmacy and putting the zinc powder into their crankcases. The new Hemmings Motor News Motor Oil makes it simple to get the right oil for your classic car, with an SJ rating (meaning it offers more than 1,600 parts per million of zinc and more than 1,500 ppm of phosphorous) and with a formulation that is designed to work with both forced induction and naturally aspirated engines and with engines running on high octane and exotic fuels.

The oil comes in three weights – a synthetic blend 10W30, a full synthetic 15W50, and a synthetic blend 20W50. – and is sold by the case of six only through Hemmings Motor News. For more information, visit Hemmings.com/ClassicOil.
