1 & 2 are likely related - as Frank mentioned, the power for the brake lights goes through the turn signal switch.  The first thing I'd check is to see if you are getting power to the sockets when the brake lights are on, it could be you have more than one issue.  From there, take a look at the connectors at the column and the front of the engine compartment to be sure they are clean and seated.

Sounds like your proposed linkage fix is a good idea.  Judicious use (you should be good at that) of carb cleaner will probably help, I'll bet there's some paint/bondo dust here and there.

400 isn't unreasonable on the stock gauge, especially if the heads haven't been de-flashed.  Do you recall what it ran at before?
