Because when you pop one off and then it falls in some inaccessible spot, a common reaction is "Jesus!".

I gotta work on the '66 tonight, I don't imagine you'll want to drive it over here without brake lights.  With some tape and a paper clip you could do this by yourself if you don't get a volunteer.  You might also use a multimeter to be sure you're getting power at the switch - perhaps it's a blown fuse.
