OK, It has been bothering me that there seemed to be no reason for the 
sudden need to adjust Richard's clutch linkage.

When the bolts were found loose on the transmission to transmission 
crossmember (mount), I asked if the shims were still in place. I didn't 
hear an answer and got distracted.

So I ask again, were there shims between the transmission and the 
mount/crossmember?

I've seen a 1/2" stack of shims to get the toe adjustment right. If the 
bolts came loose and the shims fell out, then that would be a reason the 
adjustment suddenly got off by a 1/2".
