I don't remember seeing the shims but since they are kinda hidden behind the trans cross member I can't say that they were not there.  I do recall putting them in when we did his clutch job. Remember the clutch actuation issue was due to the clutch dust shield nylon washer being incorrectly installed.  It was binding in the bell housing preventing the clutch rod from getting full travel.  
Easy to check. Just need for someone to drop by Richards house and check for shims.
