Dan,
I live in Reston and have some recent experience with head removals. I have time to help if you need it.
You will want to unbolt the shrouds attached to the front and back of the head.

Bryan (et al),
Thank you for the follow up.
I was able to get under the heater hose shroud to confirm that the driver side is 3880708, so looks like they are a matching set of original 69 heads. Here is where I am so far as to disassembly:
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the heater hose shroud that was hiding the number. I removed the bottom corner bolt and the bolt inside the housing, but there does not seem enough clearance for either a ratchet or box end wrench. Any tips?
Other than removing the bellows rod and heater door assembly, is there anything else I need to do to the driver side before I begin removing items from the engine compartment?
Probably should drain the oil thanks to another reminder from removing the valve cover. Man, just put VR1 in it a couple days before the breakdown. Not a good idea to try and save it most likely.
I really am getting cheap in my old age....

Hi Dan,
The main thing to understand is that the heads varied based on several things - HP, turbo, a/c, AIR, etc. - for every year of production. Second, the head casting numbers should generally match side to side, the vacuum fittings and temp sender(s) can be moved from one side of the carb pad to the other to use a head on the other side (non-turbo applications only).
Given you have a '69 with the matching engine and the pass side is correct for the engine, it's pretty safe to assume the the driver's side is (or should be) the same number. Main thing to do now is pull the head, check the number, and decide if you want to reuse it. Even badly damaged heads can be fixed, if the seat is loose but not disintegrated it will probably cost less to go that route.
