As some of you know I have been approached by the Director of the Forney
Museum to help put on a Corvair display. The RMC and PPCC club meetings
have produced some interest and a list of cars that would be available
during 3 month period (September 1st thru November 30th, 2015).
Since some members were not at the club meeting I am sending out this email
to find out if there are any other members who would be interested in
providing their cars to the event.
So far I have the following list of people and cars who are interested.
Cory L. 66 Monza Cpe
Dusty D. 65 Monza Cpe
Jonni B. 65 Corsa Conv
Larry S. 64 Monza Cpe
Ed H. 60 Monza Cpe
Wayne R.'61 4 Dr Sedan
John K. Expressed Interest, '62 Double Rampside
As soon as the list is complete I will discuss the event with the Director
and provide the membership with the details.
Please contact Larry Schubert (larry at schuberts.com) with your car details if
you can commit to the event by Monday, October 20.
Following is an overview of some of the question I asked the Director with
his response.
1. Can a participant remove his car if he does not want to leave it for the
entire 3 month period? Larry - No. We ask that in order to make it a
professional and proper exhibit, all participating vehicles must remain in
place for the duration of the special exhibit. It is also a lot of work to
set-up and arrange an exhibit only to end up either having holes in it
mid-way through and/or have to re-arrange the cars.
2. How many cars would he need to make the display worthwhile? At least a
dozen and I'd like at least one example of a first year 1960 and a last year
1969. I'd also want at least one example of each body style; 2 & 4 door
sedan, hardtop, wagon, van, pickup and convertible.
3. Are the cars covered by a Forney insurance policy, i.e., fire, theft,
damage while on display? Each owner is required to carry their own insurance
and to provide proof of coverage, which must be in-force during the duration
of the exhibit. We ask that each owner please contact their carrier and
inform them that their car is at the Museum in a concrete & steel building
with alarm & sprinkler systems. The Museum provides basic protections in the
form of chains, but cannot be responsible for theft or damage. In my over 5
years here doing these special exhibits, we have had only one hood ornament
stolen and it turned out to be a grudge/revenge issue between the owner and
another party.
4. Some of the Corvairs are not show quality. What is your minimum
requirement? It depends upon what the term "not show quality" means.
Clearly the vehicle needs to be presentable; no rust, body damage, poor
condition interior, etc. I'm willing to be flexible, but clearly the nicer
the examples, the higher the quality of the display.
Any thing you can add based on your experience would also be helpful.
Again, I prefer to have the cars as stock as possible, as one of the goals
of these exhibits is to showcase the cars as they appeared when new or
having rolled off the assembly line. Clearly suspension modifications or
those made under the hood, where they would not be readily visible to the
amateur eye, are fine. We also welcome any memorabilia, literature, models
or signage which owners may have and would like to contribute to the
display.
If the number of cars may prove to be difficult, are there other near-by
chapters and/or non-club affiliated collectors who might wish to participate
as well?
